One of my favorite places to explore in São Paulo is the Zona Cerealista (Cereal Zone). Located a stone’s throw from the Mercado Municipal (which is much pricier, by the way) in the center of the city, the Cereal Zone offers tremendous savings on nuts, grains, spices, and dried fruits in bulk. I love comparing the prices with my neighborhood supermarket as they are often more than half the cost and the variety and quality much better. There are also some great shops to buy cheese, wines, olives and imported goods.
I recently went there to buy the ingredients for homemade granola. And even though there are some pretty great breakfast cereals for sale in the overflowing bins of Zona Cerealista, I don’t think anything can compare to your own homemade version. I usually put double of the things my family likes best (pistachios and dried apricots) plus the smell of it slowly roasting in the oven lingers for hours. Delicious!
Homemade Granola:
3 1/2 cups rolled oats
1/2 cup coconut flakes
3 cups mixed dried fruit (pick your favorite)
2 teaspoons vanilla
1 tablespoon honey
1/4 cup canola oil, grapeseed or soy oil
1/4 cup brown sugar
1 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons cinnamon
1/2 cup toasted and chopped mixed nuts
3 tablespoons sesame seeds
Preheat oven to 200 C. In a large bowl combine all your ingredients except the dried fruit. Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil. Spread a layer of your ingredients and bake, stirring every few minutes with a wooden spoon until golden. Add the fruits to the cooked and cooled mixture.
