After seeing Taxi Amarelo’s charming post on mobiles, I kept thinking that I, too, was missing this integral item above my newborn’s crib. I was planning on having my Mom bring the same mobile as Gisela’s in from the USA but it seemed like it might get mashed in the suitcase. And as my Mom and Stepfather have been here helping with an angel baby (who only sleeps and eats), we need fun projects while baby is napping (or at least that is what I think…they are accusing me of operating a sweat shop!). I thought it fitting that we all work together on a mobile for Sebastian. We spent last week sewing and stuffing felt raindrops. I have already dangled it above my little guy. He isn’t impressed – yet. I suppose three weeks is a bit early for this visual stimulation. (He doesn’t seem to get past the sense of smell: milk!) But big sister loves the mobile…perfect as they are sharing a room. Supplies: Felt, embroidery thread, sewing needle, pillow stuffing, nylon thread, wire cutters How to: Cut out two felt raindrops in the desired size and color. (I kept them all the same about 6 cm.) Sew by hand around the drops with craft/embroidery thread–which is a bit thicker in appearance. Before completing your sewing, stuff polyester filling lightly inside and close with final stitches. Cross two pieces of jewelry wire through a wooden embroidery ring, forming a plus sign. Now you are ready to hang the raindrops. Take your sewing needle and pass nylon thread through the middle of the drops (that way you can adjust their height) and knot the end so they do not fall off. Thread measurements: 16 threads on the perimeter of the ring all measuring 30 cm. (You need extra length to tie your knot around the ring.) These all had three raindrops. 4 threads for the first row of the ring all measuring 38 cm. (You need extra length to tie your knot around the ring.) These all had four raindrops. 4 threads for the second row of the ring all measuring 48 cm. (You need extra length to tie your knot around the ring.) These all had five raindrops. 1 thread for the center of the ring measuring 61 cm. (You need extra length to tie your knot around the ring) This had one raindrop at the bottom. I imagine this mobile would be cute with all sorts of shapes…I’ve been thinking little clouds, too. And you?
